Pricing Psychology for Golf Simulator Venues: How to Charge More Without Losing Customers

Most golf simulator venue owners set their prices by looking at what the venue across town is charging and pricing within a few dollars of that number. This is understandable — it feels safe. But it leaves a significant amount of revenue on the table, and it positions your venue in a race to the bottom that nobody wins.

Pricing is not just a number. It is a communication. The price you charge tells a customer something about the quality of the experience they are about to have. Understanding the psychology behind how customers evaluate price — and how to use that psychology in your favour — is one of the highest-leverage, zero-cost improvements available to most venue owners.

Why Cheaper Is Not Always More Attractive

There is a persistent myth in the entertainment and hospitality industry that lower prices always attract more customers. The research on consumer psychology tells a more nuanced story.

When a customer encounters two comparable options and one is significantly cheaper, a common response is not 'great deal' — it is 'what is wrong with the cheaper one?' Price signals quality, particularly in experiential businesses where the customer cannot fully evaluate the product before they buy it. A golf simulator session priced at $35 per hour can actually lose customers to a competitor charging $55, because the $55 price signals a premium experience that the $35 price undercuts.

This does not mean you should overcharge indiscriminately. It means your pricing should be calibrated to your actual positioning, not to what feels comfortable or competitive in a downward direction.

Anchoring: The Most Powerful Pricing Tool You Are Probably Not Using

Anchoring is the psychological tendency to rely heavily on the first number we encounter when making a decision. In practice, this means the first price a customer sees on your website or menu has an outsized influence on how they evaluate every other price.

If your pricing page leads with your most affordable option — a one-hour session at $45 — that becomes the anchor. Every other option is evaluated relative to $45. But if your page leads with your premium package — a three-hour corporate experience at $350 — then $45 suddenly feels like a very accessible entry point.

Redesign your pricing presentation to lead with your highest-value offer. Make the anchor price impressive and well-justified. Then let your standard options look reasonably priced in comparison. This single change can shift the average transaction value at your venue without changing any of the prices themselves.

The Power of Packaging Over Line-Item Pricing

When customers evaluate line-item pricing — hourly rate plus food plus equipment hire plus booking fee — they add everything up and scrutinise every number. When they evaluate a package — the Gold Experience for $120 per person, including three hours of simulator time, a drink on arrival, and complimentary club hire — they evaluate the overall value rather than picking apart each component.

Packaging also allows you to bundle lower-cost items (a drink, range balls, a scorecard printout) with your core service in ways that increase the perceived value far more than the actual cost. A $6 drink included in a package feels like a $15 gift to the customer.

Design two or three signature packages at different price points. Give them memorable names tied to the experience, not to the duration. 'The Qualifier,' 'The Tour Pro Experience,' and 'The Champion's Night' are more compelling than '1-Hour Session,' '2-Hour Session,' and 'Corporate Package.'

How to Raise Your Prices Without Losing Customers

If you have been underpricing your venue and want to correct it, the approach matters as much as the number. A sudden 30 percent price increase applied to all products will create customer friction. A gradual repositioning — supported by genuine improvements to the experience, clearer value communication, and better packaging — is almost invisible to existing customers and feels natural to new ones.

Start by increasing prices on new packages and bookings, while grandfathering existing members at their current rate for one additional season. This rewards loyalty while beginning to reposition your revenue base. Simultaneously, invest in the elements of your customer experience that justify the new price: better photography of your venue, improved booking experience, staff training, venue presentation.

Communicate the value of what you offer more explicitly. Your website should not just list prices — it should explain what makes the experience worth the price. Customer testimonials, session data, course quality, and unique features should all be visible and compelling before the customer ever sees a number.

The One Pricing Test You Should Run This Month

If you currently offer a single hourly rate and nothing else, create one premium package this week. Include your standard session time, add one low-cost item (a drink, a physical scorecard, a branded golf ball), give it a compelling name, and price it at 40 percent above your standard hourly rate. Offer it on your booking page alongside your standard option.

Track how many customers choose it. In most venues, 20 to 35 percent of customers will select the premium option when it is presented clearly alongside a standard alternative. The incremental revenue from that shift, extrapolated across a full year, is often the equivalent of hiring an additional part-time staff member.
