Your Staff Are Your Best Marketing Asset: How to Turn Your Team Into a Booking and Retention Engine

Golf simulator venues spend thousands of dollars every month on paid advertising, SEO, and social media content. Very few of them invest meaningfully in the marketing asset that is standing right behind their front desk every day: their staff.

In a hospitality and entertainment business, the quality of the human interaction a customer has during their visit is the single most important driver of whether they return, whether they refer a friend, and whether they leave a five-star Google review. Marketing brings customers through the door. Your staff determines whether they ever come back.

Here is how to turn your team into an active contributor to your venue's growth — not just its operations.

The Link Between Staff Experience and Customer Retention

Research across the hospitality industry consistently shows that customers who have a memorable positive interaction with staff are significantly more likely to return and significantly more likely to refer others than customers who had a perfectly competent but forgettable experience.

This is the fundamental insight that most venue owners miss. A customer who walks in, plays a session, and walks out without a meaningful interaction with any staff member is a customer you have not actually acquired — you have just rented your bay to them once. The interaction that makes them a regular has not happened yet.

Train your front desk and floor staff to do three specific things on every visit: greet by name when possible, ask a genuine question about the customer's experience or goals, and before they leave, give them a specific reason to come back soon. These three behaviours cost nothing to implement and have a measurable impact on return visit rates.

Staff as Review Generation Machines

Your Google review volume is one of the most important factors in your local search ranking and one of the most persuasive factors for new customers choosing your venue. Most venues rely on automated emails to collect reviews. Very few leverage the most powerful review trigger available to them: a personal, in-the-moment ask from a staff member right after a great session.

The psychology is straightforward. When a customer finishes a session and a staff member says, 'That looked like a great round — we would love it if you left us a review on Google, it really helps us out,' the ask feels personal and human. The customer is still in the emotional high of their experience. Compliance rates for in-person review asks are dramatically higher than for follow-up emails.

Train every staff member to make this ask as part of their standard session closeout. Make it easy by having a QR code displayed at the counter that takes the customer directly to your Google review page. Remove every possible friction point between the ask and the completed review.

Turning Staff Into Content Creators

Some of your most engaging social media content is already happening at your venue every day — it just is not being captured. A staff member filming a customer's reaction after a hole-in-one, a quick video of a corporate group laughing through a team scramble, a time-lapse of a busy Friday night — this content is authentic, specific, and genuinely interesting in a way that planned promotional shoots rarely are.

Create a simple internal content protocol: which moments are worth capturing, how to ask customers for permission to post footage, and where to send clips so they can be uploaded and scheduled. You do not need expensive equipment. Modern smartphones produce more than sufficient quality for social media. What you need is staff who notice the moments and know what to do with them.

Incentivise content contribution. A small monthly bonus or gift card for the staff member whose captured content generates the most engagement costs you almost nothing and creates a culture of awareness around your venue's marketing.

Empowering Staff to Upsell Without Feeling Salesy

The word 'upselling' carries negative connotations — pushy, transactional, uncomfortable. But effective upselling in a hospitality context is not about pushing products customers do not want. It is about matching customers with options they did not know existed that would genuinely improve their experience.

A customer booking a two-hour session who does not know about your coaching add-on is not benefiting from your silence. A customer who asks about memberships and gets a confused answer from a staff member who does not know the details is a lost opportunity.

Train your team on every service, package, and membership tier you offer. Give them simple scripts for introducing each option naturally in conversation. 'Are you coming in regularly? We have a membership that would save you about $X a month' is not pushy — it is genuinely helpful.

The Staff Experience Drives the Customer Experience

One final principle that is easy to overlook: your staff cannot consistently deliver outstanding customer experiences if they themselves are disengaged, undertrained, or feel unvalued. The venues with the best customer retention metrics are almost always the venues with the best staff cultures.

Invest in your team's product knowledge, celebrate their contributions to venue growth, involve them in decisions where possible, and make sure they understand how their daily interactions connect to the business's success. An engaged team is not just better at operations — they are an active force in your marketing ecosystem.
