The 5 Types of Golf Simulator Customers (And How to Market to Each One)

One of the most common mistakes golf simulator venue owners make in their marketing is treating all customers the same. A single generic message broadcast to everyone — 'Come play golf indoors!' — connects deeply with almost nobody, because it is not speaking to any specific person's specific reason for visiting.

The most effective marketing is specific. It speaks directly to a particular type of person about the particular thing they are looking for. And the first step to doing that well is understanding exactly who your customers actually are.

After working with golf simulator venues across North America, we have identified five distinct customer personas that walk through simulator venue doors. Each has different motivations, different objections, different preferred channels, and a very different message that resonates with  them. Here is how to identify and market to each one.

Persona 1: The Serious Golfer

The serious golfer plays outdoors at least once a week during the season, tracks their handicap, has opinions about equipment, and visits your simulator primarily for training purposes. They want accurate ball flight data, realistic course conditions, and the ability to work on specific aspects of their game — driving accuracy, approach shots, short game.

What motivates them: Measurable improvement. Access to world-class courses they cannot play locally. The ability to practice year-round.

How to reach them: Google Ads targeting 'golf simulator training' and 'launch monitor sessions.' Content marketing on your blog and YouTube covering swing improvement, data interpretation, and course strategy. Partnerships with local golf instructors and pro shops.

What they need to see before booking: Launch monitor specs and accuracy data. Course library — are Pebble Beach, St Andrews, and Augusta available? Coaching add-on options. A booking process that lets them select specific courses and time slots without friction.

Persona 2: The Social Golfer

The social golfer is not obsessed with their handicap. They play golf a few times a year, enjoy the social dimension of the game far more than the competitive side, and choose your venue for a fun group experience — date night, friend group outing, birthday celebration.

What motivates them: A memorable, fun experience. Great atmosphere. Food and drinks. Something different to do with a group.

How to reach them: Instagram and Facebook ads showing groups having fun, laughing, and celebrating. TikTok content capturing real emotional moments. Retargeting people who have searched for 'things to do' or 'entertainment' in your city.

What they need to see before booking: Photos and video of the venue atmosphere. Group package options with food and drink included. Clear pricing with no hidden fees. Easy group booking — no one in this group wants to manage a complicated reservation process.

Persona 3: The Corporate Event Planner

This persona is not necessarily a golfer at all. They are an HR manager, executive assistant, or team lead who needs to plan an event for 10 to 30 people. They are evaluating your venue against escape rooms, bowling alleys, cooking classes, and rooftop bars. They are busy, they are risk-averse, and they need to justify the choice to their colleagues.

What motivates them: An impressive experience that reflects well on them as the planner. Easy logistics. A clear package with predictable pricing. A venue that handles the details so they do not have to.

How to reach them: LinkedIn ads targeting HR professionals, event coordinators, and team leads within your city. Google Ads for 'corporate event venues' and 'team outing ideas.' Email outreach to HR contacts at nearby businesses.

What they need to see before booking: A dedicated corporate events page with packages, group pricing, catering options, capacity, and AV capabilities. Testimonials from other companies. A simple inquiry form and a fast response. The ability to get a custom quote without a lengthy phone call.

Persona 4: The Beginner or Non-Golfer

This is your most overlooked persona and one of your biggest growth opportunities. The beginner or non-golfer is curious about golf but has never played, or has tried it once on a real course and found it intimidating. They are interested in your venue because a friend suggested it, they saw a social media post, or they are looking for something different to do.

What motivates them: The reassurance that they will not embarrass themselves. The promise that no experience is needed. The social safety net of doing it as part of a group.

How to reach them: Social media content that explicitly invites people who have never played golf. Ads with messaging like 'No experience needed — just fun.' Beginner packages or intro sessions that lower the barrier to a first visit.

What they need to see before booking: Explicit reassurance that beginners are welcome. Content showing non-golfers having a great time. Simple pricing. A booking option that does not require them to know golf terminology to complete a reservation.

Persona 5: The Parent Looking for Family Activities

Parents with kids aged 8 to 16 are constantly searching for activities that the whole family can enjoy together, that are not a movie theatre, and that do not require perfect weather. If your simulator software includes family-friendly games and shorter course options, this persona is a significant untapped market.

What motivates them: Quality time with their kids. An activity everyone can participate in regardless of skill level. Value for money for a group. Indoor option for rainy days or winter weekends.

How to reach them: Facebook ads targeting parents in your local area. Google Ads for 'family activities' and 'things to do with kids' in your city. Seasonal campaigns around school holidays and winter months.

What they need to see before booking: Kid-friendly course and game options. Family package pricing. Age appropriateness. Photos showing kids and parents enjoying the experience together.

Putting It Into Practice

You do not need five entirely separate marketing campaigns running simultaneously to serve all five personas. Start by identifying which persona represents the largest untapped opportunity for your venue right now. Build one targeted campaign aimed specifically at that persona, with messaging, creative, and a landing page designed for them.

The shift from generic messaging to persona-specific marketing is one of the most impactful changes a golf simulator venue can make to its marketing performance — often without increasing the budget at all.
